Why be surprised when a 14-year-old Mormon has a spiritual experience?

Tonight Larry King interviewed the family of Brennan Hawkins, the boy who was lost on a Boy Scout activity and then rescued four days later. It was one of the most awkward interviews I’ve seen in a long time. However, amongst all the uncomfortable moments, one moment left Larry with a deer-in-the-headlights look that was worth enduring the whole segment.

Larry asked Brennan’s 14-year-old brother if he ever doubted that Brennan would be found alive. The brother stiltedly responded:

“No, I knew he was alive . . . I felt the spirit.”

“Do Sweet Potatoes!”

Our 6-month-old just started eating solid foods. We’ve been going through a process of trial and error, sticking stuff in her mouth. Whatever we shove in and stays there, we shove more in. Whatever we shove in and find projected onto our shirts stays out. The projectile process is more or less violent, depending on how much she dislikes the food. So far, her least favorite food is sweet potatoes. The first time she had them, our mischievous 2-year-old was present. The baby took a bite, then snapped her head back, squinted, frowned, and shook her head jerkily from side to side, mouth open, tongue out. This grimacing and shaking went on hysterically for about 30 seconds. So my wife decided, “That’s it, no sweet potatoes for you.”

The next day when Laura went to feed the baby, our 2-year-old came over and suggested, “How about we do sweet potatoes?”

Romney, Press Darling Du Jour

Ears are pricking up. After landing not only a Weekly Review feature and cover, but also finding himself plastered on the cover of National Review (with another feature story to boot), the under-the-radarness of Romney is starting to be replaced by front-and-center media attention.

The question underlying all the chatter was expressed by Weekly Review - “Can a Republican governor of a Democratic state become America’s first Mormon president?”

Here are a handful of articles I thought important to understand Romney and his chances in an ‘08 Presidential election.

New Jersey kids

Today I was reading through some of my old journal entries from the New Jersey days and I came across these two stories I had noted. It had the effect of making me miss New Jersey terribly, while simultaneously praising a higher power that I now lived on the other side of the continent from it.

The Functional Necessity of Limits for Maximum Creative Output

I’ve noticed that in my personal creative life that nothing spawns creativity so well as does a mandate to work within limits. When one is given a set of “must nots” when undergoing a creative endeavor, these very limits provide the resistance to push up against and make something muscular within them.

According to these guys, this could be a big year for me.

I’m 29 and a half, so expect big things imminently.

Here’s the story.

The only downer is that they say the concept of the Rennaisance man is all but dead for practical purposes. A big blow to my life choices/trajectory.
